The Best Men Can Be Gillette’s recent ad campaign is stirring up controversy over toxic masculinity and what place a corp has in speaking on the topic. Social media discourse aside, the missing item from the convo is this: What exactly is the standard of “the best men can be?” You can’t pursue a vision that isn’t defined. Wisdom once wrote, “Where there is no vision the people perish.” So what is our vision and standard as a people? Here’s a vision for men that is time tested and true: — The best a man can be is one who can hold a sword in one hand and a baby in another — A man is both violent and tender. Useful and fun. Disciplined and romantic. Society needs dangerous men who know how to be gentle. Manhood is a core value that makes the heart of both men and women light up, and it facilitates order and justice. For thousands of years every culture has had a ceremonial rite of passage in which boys inherit responsibility and accountability from their community as new men. In modern culture we’ve lost that and, for many other reasons as well, we therefore have a “toxic masculinity” problem where boys don’t grow up into men. A child learns what they’re taught including indifference, pain and silence. Boys and men: If you aspire to be the best you can be, look to admirable father figures (alive and dead) and learn what it means to be a man — then live it. Gillette: thank you for bringing this topic up to the social lime light again. If you need a good place to start, read “Wild at Heart” by John Eldredge. You won’t regret it.

With MLK Jr. Day one week away it's a good time to remember the power of your culture/background. Mine is Latino, so here's 3 fun facts: 1. Did you know that the No. 1 and 11 most viewed YouTube videos of all time are Latin songs? And that the No. 1 song in 2018 is based off a 1960's Latin boogaloo one? Our music, dance, and passionate energy is desired by many around the world. 2. Did you know that Spanish is the world's 2nd most spoken language? We have a unique advantage over 1st China and 3rd English because our people span 3 continents where the alphabet and grammar are extremely similar. We can integrate easily. 3. Did you know that Latino's are the largest minority in the US at 17% and the youngest by a full decade (28 median age). Our influence is deep across the construction, farming, restaurant, hospitality and entertainment industries. We're everywhere and growing faster than other groups. Lesson: Latinos son la salsa mas rica y apasionado pa tener con sus tortillitas. You'll be hard pressed to find a mix of suave romance and ambitious discipline like ours.
